The Issue

Halloween is  one of the greatest holidays of all time. The costumes. The candy. The Parties!!!

Having Halloween on the last Saturday of October ensures that more children and adults can fully enjoy the festivities without the pressure of school or work the next morning. Calgary families could participate in Halloween activities without worrying about the weekday bedtime, while local businesses could thrive with additional weekend traffic as people have more time and energy to shop for costumes, decorations, and sweets.

A 2019 study conducted by the Halloween and Costume Association found that 70% of parents wanted to move Halloween to a weekend. When families want to enjoy the evening and make the most out of their time together, moving Halloween to a Saturday seems like a sensible proposal. It allows more community events, such as parades and parties, increasing social interaction and community ties.

Additionally, hosting Halloween on a Saturday would reduce traffic concerns and accidents that notoriously occur on Halloween night when people are rushing home from work or school to prepare. Law enforcement would have an easier time managing safety during party hours, reducing complications. This shift would lead to a safer, more community-oriented holiday for everyone.

We propose establishing Halloween as a floating holiday, ensuring it always falls on the last Saturday of October in Calgary. This change would provide consistency for families and educators while keeping the spirit and fun of Halloween alive without the post-celebration stress.

By signing this petition, you are letting Mayor Jeromy Farkas and all of  Calgary City Council know that you support a more joyous, family-friendly, and community-oriented Halloween for all Calgarians. Together, let's make Halloween the magical, fun-filled Saturday festival it deserves to be! Please sign and share this petition to help us make Halloween a better holiday for everyone in Calgary.
