Make First Aid MANDATORY learning in schools

The Issue

A British Red Cross statistic shows that up to 59% of deaths caused by injuries across the UK could have been prevented if First Aid had been administered before medical services arrived. It’s also estimated that over 600.000 people suffer non-fatal work injuries every year, and almost a fifth of the work-related injuries are caused by slips, trips, and falls, so there are plenty of opportunities for first-aiders to help.

No child wants to be placed in the situation of watching a parent die from a heart attack, or an accident. The trauma can last their entire lifetime. To think , that just the administration of First Aid could have made the difference between life and death. Children needn't fear, and be helpless in the face of such a frightening situation. Children are fast learners, and the provision of First Aid at schools as part of the curriculum would help to normalise the skill across the nation. There are obvious benefits to the country too, as it can help to reduce the strain on the already struggling NHS - it makes sound economic sense too, so why not do it?

Children from as young as 3 can be taught the subject of First Aid, such as calling 999 when a parent is poorly, and safe-eating practices for example. Older children can learn about bumps, breaks, burns and bleeding, how to carry out CPR and how to deal with choking - so there is no valid argument to suggest children cannot learn these vital skills.

First aid skills are probably the most important and useful skills any person could ever learn in their lifetime, and nothing is more important than life itself. The government needs to mandate the inclusion of First Aid training in our schools - it should not be an option, but something every child needs to learn. Every day this does not happen, lives are being lost and hearts are being broken. The dream is that one day, EVERYONE will know First Aid and by starting with our children, we can reach that utopia. So ACT NOW!

Parliament need at least 10,000 signatures to even look at a petition. I seek at least 100,000 to make sure they pay attention. The truth is, I want this to be a global change, however, I'm setting my sights on starting closer to home for now.

The number of lives that would not have been lost. The number of parents that would still be here today.... so please, make this happen! -- Thank you.
