The Issue

On a recent Christmas night out, I experienced a night that began with joy and camaraderie, quickly turning into a nightmare. As I left Cheerz Bar on Belmont Street to gather my jacket, a man whom I had briefly encountered earlier in the evening, followed me down Market Street. Despite my clear discomfort and attempts to deter him, he forced me into the dark and secluded Exchange Lane, repeatedly attempting to assault me. This frightening experience has sparked a deep desire in me to ensure this never happens to anyone else.

the scary part for me is that it could of been a lot worse. if he had not been disturbed. We all deserve to be safe and have the appropriate measures to make it safe for us all. especially for women and girls

Exchange Lane, a pathway that many traverse at night in Aberdeen’s bustling city centre, remains shrouded in darkness, making it a dangerous hotspot for unwanted advances and assault. The lack of proper lighting and security creates an unsafe environment for countless individuals, especially during busy nights when bars and clubs are full of patrons.

Many cities have responded to similar incidents by implementing better lighting, increased security patrols, and installing CCTV cameras to deter crime. It's time we take similar actions here in Aberdeen. Installing adequate street lighting, ensuring regular police patrols, and fitting CCTV cameras can significantly reduce these abominable incidents and make Exchange Lane a safe passage for all.

Statistics indicate that well-lit areas decrease the occurrence of street crime by a great margin. According to a study by the City of San Diego, street lighting reduced night time crime by 36%, and CCTV installations contributed to a further 16% reduction in assaults. These measures are not just investments in infrastructure but also investments in the safety and peace of mind of all who live in or visit our city.

Let's come together to create a safer Aberdeen for everyone. Sign this petition to urge the Aberdeen City Council to implement necessary changes on Exchange Lane. Together, we can make a difference and prevent future tragedies like mine from ever occurring again.
