Make Enugu Historic Sites a National Monument
The Issue
Background:
Seventy-five years ago, on November 18, 1949, The Iva Valley coal miners massacre happened. The tragic shooting to death of 21 Coal Miners by colonial British Police during a protest remains a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who toiled in the coal mines. Decades later, that story isn’t being told. Yet coal mining is a part of the very identity of Enugu. It is a narrative deserving of preservation for future generations to learn about and honour.
Our Petition:
We, the undersigned, call upon the Enugu State Government to allow the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (National Museum of Unity, Enugu) to complete the work they started in 2012 to acknowledge the significance of Enugu's historic sites by designating the following locations as National Monuments:
Coal Corporation Headquarters: The administrative centre of the coal mining operations in Enugu, where decisions were made that shaped the lives of countless miners and their families.
Coal Preparation Plant: The site where coal was processed and prepared for use, serving as a crucial hub in the coal mining industry of Enugu.
Iva Mine: The location of the tragic Iva Valley coal miners massacre, to serve as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who laboured in the mines.
Why It Matters:
By designating these sites as National Monuments, we honour the memory of the coal miners who lost their lives and pay tribute to their enduring legacy. It serves as a reminder of sacrifices made in the pursuit of progress.
Furthermore, preserving these sites ensures that future generations can learn about the coal mining industry in Enugu and its impact on our nation's development. It provides a platform for education, reflection, and remembrance.
Join Us:
We urge all Nigerians who value our history and heritage to stand with us in petitioning the Enugu State Government to take action. Let us ensure that the sacrifices of the past are not forgotten and that Enugu's historic sites are duly recognized and preserved for generations to come.
Sign the petition today and help us honour the memory of the coal miners and commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Iva Valley Coal Miners massacre.
