Make enhanced DBS checks mandatory for Nannies and Tutors

The Issue

In the heart of our homes, where young minds grow and dreams take flight, our children are often entrusted to the care of nannies, babysitters, and tutors. Yet, the safety measures safeguarding these intimate environments remain alarmingly insufficient. As members of the National Nanny Association, we've long documented for better practices within our industry—a largely unregulated field where assumptions about safety can lead parents into a false sense of security.

Most parents today believe that the individuals they hire have already undergone comprehensive background checks. In reality, there is no legal requirement for a Nanny or self employed Nanny or Tutor to have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This leaves a significant gap in ensuring the safety and protection of our children, who deserve a secure and nurturing environment, free from potential harm.

Enhancing DBS checks, specifically tailored for those working in home environments, should be made mandatory by law. This policy change would ensure that all individuals working closely with children are thoroughly vetted, thus reinforcing trust between parents and carers. Additionally, it is imperative to simplify the application process for self-employed workers, ensuring no logistical barriers deter them from obtaining this crucial certification.

A legal mandate for enhanced DBS checks will foster a culture of accountability and transparency within the childcare sector. It will protect our children, assure parents, and elevate the standards of care provided behind closed doors.

Our children’s safety should never be compromised. It's time to turn assumptions into legally binding assurances. By signing this petition, you endorse a safer, more secure environment for every child and support reforms that make substantial, positive impacts in the nanny and tutor industry. Let's take this step together for the future of our children.
