Today is James Garfield’s birthday. He was born on this day in 1831 in Orange Township, Ohio. I know I would mention him briefly yesterday for Arthur’s death day as Garfield won the election in 1880. Garfield had served in the Ohio State Senate from 1859 to 1861. He then served in the Civil War. He left the military in 1863 to represent Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives. Garfield had the second shortest presidential term at 199 days. I know other presidents are more well known than Garfield (and even Arthur, I tend to forget Arthur and remember all the other presidents, though not in order). I feel like they do fit in with this as he was our president (though he was president before we all were born), an elected official. Elected officials are what makes election day election day.
