Today in U.S. political history, Chester Arthur died on this day in 1886. He is relevant for Election day is that he was elected as James Garfield’s Vice President in 1880 and became president after Garfield’s death. Arthur didn’t win reelection in 1884, with Teddy Roosevelt two decades later being the first president to win reelection after becoming president after the death of their predecessor.
