Make Eid al-Adha a 4-Day Holiday in NYC Public Schools

Make Eid al-Adha a 4-Day Holiday in NYC Public Schools
The Issue
Eid al-Adha—also known as the Big Eid—is the most sacred holiday in Islam. Unlike Eid al-Fitr, which typically lasts 1–2 days, Eid al-Adha is celebrated for 4 full days around the world. It is one of only two religious holidays that Muslims observe each year.
Currently, NYC public schools allow just one day off, often not aligning with the correct date due to the lunar calendar. In 2025, for example, Eid will fall on Friday, June 6, but the NYC DOE scheduled the day off for Thursday, June 5. Muslims should have the right to their full religious recognition all around the world!
📣 We are calling on the DOE and Mayor Adams to:
✅ Officially recognize all 4 days of Eid al-Adha in the NYC school calendar OR
✅ Allow 4-day excused absences for Muslim students and staff, without penalty, testing, or loss of instruction.
🕌 Why It Matters:
- Muslims have only two holidays; both deserve full recognition.
- Eid’s dates shift yearly based on the moon, so an estimate is essential to ensure one day aligns properly.
- Christian and Jewish holidays like Christmas and Passover are granted multiple days off—Muslims deserve equal treatment.
- No student or school employee should ever be forced to choose between their faith and attendance.
Join us in demanding that New York City honor all faiths equally. Sign today for justice, dignity, and inclusion.
