Make Education & Democracy Test Mandatory for All Election Candidates in India

The Issue

India is the world’s largest democracy, built on the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who gave equal rights to every citizen to contest elections. At the time of Independence, when literacy was below 20%, this was the most inclusive and just system.

But today, with literacy crossing 77% and governance becoming increasingly complex, it is time for a democratic reform.

Currently, anyone — even without education or knowledge of the Constitution — can contest elections. This has resulted in unqualified individuals entering law-making positions, leading to poor governance and misuse of power.

We, the citizens of India, demand that minimum education qualification and a compulsory test on democracy and Constitution be introduced for all election candidates.

Our Demands:

1.Minimum Education Qualification:

Panchayat/Municipal level – 10th Pass

MLA – 12th Pass

MP – Graduate

2.Compulsory Exam on Democracy & Constitution:

A basic exam (MCQ + Viva) to test knowledge of Indian Constitution, Fundamental Rights & Duties, Parliamentary procedures, and core democratic values.

Conducted by Election Commission of India before filing nomination.

3.Implementation in Phases:

Start with new candidates from 2029 General Elections.

Allow time for awareness and preparation.

Why This Is Necessary:

To ensure our lawmakers are informed, responsible, and capable.

To protect democracy from corruption, caste/religion-based politics, and misuse of public money.

To inspire youth to value education and public service.

To fulfill Ambedkar’s dream of an enlightened, educated, and empowered India.

Call to Action:

We, the citizens of India, strongly urge the Election Commission, Parliament, and Supreme Court of India to make this reform a reality.

A democracy run by educated and aware representatives is the only way to build a strong and prosperous nation.
