The Issue

Over two years ago, I welcomed a cat into my home in Dalton-in-Furness, UK. He became a part of my family. Tragically, he was chased upstairs and severely mauled by a dog that intruded into our home. Our cat's injuries were so serious that we had no choice but to put him to sleep. My grievance went unheeded, with the police unable to act because the victim was a cat.

In the UK, the law currently views cases like mine as civil disputes rather than criminal offences. This creates a tragic loophole in animal protection, where dogs can kill or maim cats without any meaningful legal consequences for their owners. Current laws fail to recognise pets as loving family members who should be protected under legislation.

Every year in the UK, numerous cat owners share similar ordeals. A Cats Protection survey revealed that as many as two in three cats killed by dogs in 2018 were attacked in their own garden. Rethinking the Animals Act 1971 and adding stronger regulations against dogs killing or injuring cats would not only protect cats but also promote responsible pet ownership among dog owners.

Reform is necessary - make it a criminal offence for dogs to kill or injure cats in the UK. Sign this petition to stand for the rights of our feline family members and encourage responsible pet ownership. Only with your support can we prompt a legal shift that will honour and protect all pets.
