The Issue

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by millions of people around the world. Diwali is a  public holiday in many countries like India, Nepal, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of people in Australia celebrate Diwali. I’m calling on the government to make Diwali a holiday in Australia.

Recently, US lawmakers have introduced a bill to make Diwali a federal holiday in the United States to recognise the cultural heritage of millions of Americans who celebrate the holiday. Australia must follow suit.

Diwali is a beautiful festival that celebrates lightness over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Recognising and celebrating different festivals can help connect our diverse communities together.
