Make dating apps inclusive for people who follow a gluten-free diet

The Issue

What & Why
This is an initiative from Schär, shared with the global gluten-free community. We started from the observation that none of the popular dating apps in the world have the gluten-free badge included among all the other food diets or preferences that you can set on your profile. We want to rally the global community in our efforts to make dating inclusive and more comfortable for everyone.

Who is impacted?
Following a gluten-free diet doesn’t only change what’s on one’s plate, but impacts life on many levels, including socializing and, more specifically, dating. Studies have shown that people who follow a gluten-free diet will develop more anxieties about dating; stress factors can be:

  • having to expose your diet to someone new & not knowing how they will react
  • having to explain your diet at a restaurant during a date
the fear of being judged or rejected
  • having to pretend you’re not hungry because you didn’t want to disclose your choices on a (first) date or don’t feel safe

A simple solution to our problem
All popular dating apps have a profile setup step where you can include diets or the foods that you love. Still, the most important badge for such a large community is missing. Now is the time to ask all dating apps to just include a new badge – the Gluten-free badge.

How things will change for the better
Instead of focusing on the anxiety of their coming out, people who follow a gluten-free diet can simply include this badge on their profile. If this becomes visible to everyone, the people from our community can avoid unpleasant situations (or people) and focus instead on more wholesome things, like falling in love.
