Make Cyber Bullying and Harassment a Criminal Offence

Make Cyber Bullying and Harassment a Criminal Offence
The Issue
I am writing this petition from a place of deep concern. I have been witnessing relentless harassment and bullying on social media platforms, where innocent people are being targeted, exposed, and ridiculed for the amusement of others. There have been multiple instances where bullies have even posted their victims underage children to provoke their victims. They attack children, family members - both living and deceased - by exposing their photographs, personal information such as addresses, private pictures or videos and other sensitive information.
This is not just an invasion of privacy; it's a direct assault on mental health and safety. The effects of cyberbullying can be devastating; according to the Cyberbullying Research Center (2017), victims are nearly twice as likely to attempt suicide compared to those who haven't experienced cyberbullying.
We, the undersigned, call upon our government to take a stand against cyber bullying and harassment by making it a criminal offence and therefore punishable by law.
Cyber bullying has become increasingly prevalent in our society, causing immense harm to individuals, especially to our youth. The use of social media and other online platforms has made it easier for people to engage in hateful and harmful behaviour, often without facing any consequences. We demand for this to change and become recognised as criminal offences under law enforcement agencies.
Social media platforms should also be held accountable for allowing such harmful behaviour on their sites due to inadequate safety measures in place for it’s users. We believe that it is time for our legal system to recognise the severity of cyber bullying and take decisive action to address this issue. By making it a criminal offence, we can send a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated and those who engage in it will be held accountable for their actions.
We call upon lawmakers to enact stringent laws against online bullying and that the social media platforms will hold perpetrators accountable for their actions including banning them from these platforms via IP tracking. Let us work together towards creating safer online spaces where everyone can express themselves without fear or threat.
Furthermore, by enacting laws to criminalise cyber bullying, we can provide victims with the support and protection they need to seek justice and reclaim their sense of safety and well-being.
We urge the government to prioritise the safety and well-being of all individuals by taking action and a firm stance against this harmful behaviour by recognising that making it a criminal offence, together we can work towards creating a society where all individuals can feel safe and respected, both online and offline.
Please sign this petition if you also believe in making our digital world safer by making cyber bullying a crime punishable by law.
