Natasha's Law is a UK law that requires food businesses to fully label pre-packed food for direct sale, including the presence of allergens:
What it does:
Requires food businesses to label pre-packed food with a full list of ingredients, including the 14 major allergens
What it applies to:
Includes pre-wrapped sandwiches, fast food, and supermarket items like deli meats and cheeses.
Why it was introduced:
To protect people with food allergies after Natasha Ednan-Laperouse died from an allergic reaction to a baguette at age 15
When it came into effect:
October 2021
The 14 allergens are:
Celery, Cereals containing gluten, Crustaceans, Eggs, Fish, Lupin, Milk, Molluscs, Mustard, and Peanuts.
Businesses can help ensure compliance with Natasha's Law by:
Training staff regularly on the requirements
Conducting internal audits to identify discrepancies
Keeping staff informed if product ingredients change.
A fantastic law that should have been in place much longer ago than 2021, progress is always so very slow but we push on!
