Too many young children in UK nurseries are being left vulnerable behind closed doors.

On 3 December 2025, a nursery worker in North London pleaded guilty to 26 offences of sexual abuse against children under his care and these crimes went unnoticed for years because there was no transparent monitoring or accountability. This should never happen again.

Children who cannot talk, explain, or understand what is happening are being cared for in environments where parents have no visibility and where supervision is stretched far beyond safe capacity.

Current UK laws do NOT require CCTV in nursery classrooms.

Staff ratios legally allow:

1 adult to 5 children aged 2
1 adult to 8 children aged 3+
This is unsafe, unrealistic, and unacceptable.

Children deserve active supervision. Parents deserve transparency.

 
What we are demanding:

✔ 1. Mandatory CCTV in ALL nursery classrooms & play areas
Excluding bathrooms/toileting areas
Professionally monitored
Footage accessible to parents.
 
✔ 2. Improved staff–to–child ratios
Especially for children aged 0–3
Minimum expectation: 1 adult to 2 children

• Young children need:

constant supervision.
emotional support.
safe transitions.
attentive personal care.
One adult cannot adequately manage 5–8 children alone!

✔ 3. National safeguarding standards enforced by law
Including:

documented toileting supervision.
recorded incident reports.
transparent staff conduct expectations.
accountability for unreported absences.
 
Why this matters
Children under nursery age cannot defend themselves, cannot report harm, and cannot describe abuse. CCTV does not just protect children — it protects staff, ensures accountability, and builds genuine trust between families and providers.

With improved supervision and visibility, countless incidents of neglect, unsafe handling, mistreatment, and emotional harm could be prevented.

We must ensure that what happened in North London never happens again!!!!!!!!

Parents deserve peace of mind.

Children deserve safety.

And the government must act.
