I'm writing to share my personal journey living with Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by the growth of both benign and malignant tumors in different organs. In my case, I have 30 cysts on my left kidney and 16 on my right. Of these, two cysts on my left kidney have developed into active cancerous tumors, one of which has grown over 40mm. The situation is dire, as without access to the drug Belzutifan, I could face the prospect of undergoing major surgery every six months to manage the condition.

Belzutifan represents a groundbreaking therapeutic option for VHL patients, specifically targeting the genetic abnormalities that lead to tumor growth. It’s not just a new medication; it’s a potential lifeline for those like me who face constant medical interventions and the accompanying risks. However, despite its potential, Belzutifan remains inaccessible to many due to restrictions in availability and cost.

This inaccessibility is an injustice to all who suffer from VHL. The high cost and stringent regulations on drug distribution mean that it is beyond the reach of many patients desperately in need of effective treatment. We have treated conditions like cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia holistically and have found ways to make novel drugs accessible. So why must VHL patients continue to face immense physical, emotional, and financial burdens when a more effective treatment is available?

We have the power to change this unfair situation. I urge health organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and policymakers to commit to making Belzutifan accessible for all VHL patients. We need policies that will ensure it is included in public health plans and private insurance coverage, and we must advocate for its availability across the globe. It’s time to prioritize the lives of VHL patients and ensure that everyone who needs Belzutifan can access it without prohibitive financial barriers.
