Make Beldam Bridge Road Safer: A Zebra Crossing at Kings Road, West End
Make Beldam Bridge Road Safer: A Zebra Crossing at Kings Road, West End
The Issue
We call on Surrey County Council to install a safe pedestrian crossing at the junction of Kings Road and Beldam Bridge Road, West End, Surrey, to protect children, families and all pedestrians using this busy road.
Why we need action
As residents of West End, we are increasingly concerned about the safety of pedestrians crossing Beldam Bridge Road, particularly children travelling to and from school.
The Rose Meadow and Beldam Bridge developments are home to many families with young children. Every school day, children and parents need to cross Beldam Bridge Road as part of their journeys to Holy Trinity Primary School and other local destinations.
At present, there is no dedicated pedestrian crossing at the junction of Kings Road and Beldam Bridge Road to provide a safe, designated place for people to cross. Families are left to judge gaps in traffic and hope that approaching drivers will slow down and give way when it is safe to do so.
Although the speed limit along this section of Beldam Bridge Road has been reduced from 40mph to 30mph, residents continue to have concerns about vehicles travelling at speeds that do not feel safe for pedestrians. A speed limit is only effective when it is observed and enforced.
Children should not have to take their chances crossing a road on their everyday journey to school.
Previous concerns have not resolved the problem
We recognise that road safety in West End has been raised previously.
In 2018, West End Parish Council raised concerns about traffic using Beldam Bridge Road as a cut-through and asked about traffic-calming measures, including pedestrian crossing provision near Holy Trinity School.
In 2021, highway safety concerns were again raised in connection with development along Beldam Bridge Road. Measures included a reduction in the speed limit to 30mph, vehicle-activated speed-limit signs and pedestrian footway provision. A separate school road-safety petition subsequently secured recommendations for improvements around Holy Trinity School on Benner Lane.
We welcome the steps that have been taken. However, the crossing needs of residents at the Kings Road and Beldam Bridge Road junction remain a concern. Improvements in one location do not automatically make another crossing point safe.
We believe the time has come to assess the needs of the families who live here and use this road every day.
Recent events make this urgent
On 31 October 2026, Halloween, a young person was reportedly struck by a vehicle on Beldam Bridge Road. We recognise that the full circumstances of this incident need to be established, but it has heightened existing concerns about pedestrian safety in our community.
We should not have to wait for a serious injury or worse before taking preventative action.
What we are asking Surrey County Council to do:
- Assess the feasibility of installing a zebra crossing at the junction of Kings Road and Beldam Bridge Road, providing a safer crossing point for children, families and other pedestrians travelling between the residential developments and local amenities.
- Undertake a pedestrian and traffic safety assessment, including traffic speeds, traffic volumes, pedestrian movements during school drop-off and collection times, visibility and the needs of younger and more vulnerable road users.
- Review speed enforcement and traffic-calming options along Beldam Bridge Road, including whether average-speed cameras, other appropriate enforcement measures or additional physical traffic-calming measures would improve compliance with the existing 30mph speed limit.
Consult local residents, West End Parish Council, Holy Trinity Primary School and relevant highways representatives to ensure that the needs of local families are properly considered. - Publish the findings and a clear plan of action, including timescales and potential funding options, so residents understand what will happen next.
- If a zebra crossing is not considered feasible at this location, we ask the council to explain why and identify an effective alternative that provides a safe and accessible crossing point.
Our children deserve safe journeys
This petition is not about blaming individual drivers or opposing traffic. It is about recognising that our roads must work safely for everyone who uses them, including the children who live in our community.
The developments around Beldam Bridge Road have brought more homes and families into the area. Pedestrian infrastructure needs to reflect the people who now live here and the journeys they need to make.
A properly assessed pedestrian crossing, supported by appropriate speed management, would give families greater confidence that their children can travel around their neighbourhood safely.
