Make Beachy Head Road Safer with Traffic Calming Measures

The Issue

Like many people in Eastbourne, I have witnessed the devastating consequences of a high-speed collision on Beachy Head Road.

The tragic incident I witnessed involved a motorcyclist losing control of their bike, resulting in the loss of their life. It is something I will never forget, and it highlights a much wider road safety issue.

Beachy Head Road, particularly around the S-bend, has become a hotspot for excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking and anti-social driving. Sadly, this is far from an isolated incident. There have been numerous serious collisions over recent years, leaving families devastated and placing an enormous burden on our emergency services.

Without action, it is only a matter of time before another life is lost. The next victim could be a motorcyclist, cyclist, pedestrian, resident, visitor, or even a child.

The people of Eastbourne can no longer stand by while this dangerous stretch of road continues to put lives at risk. We are calling on East Sussex County Council to introduce appropriate traffic calming measures on Beachy Head Road, particularly around the S-bend. These could include measures such as average speed cameras, changes to the speed limit, improved road engineering, enhanced signage, road markings, or other proven safety interventions recommended by road safety experts.

The exact solution should be determined by the relevant authorities, but doing nothing is no longer acceptable.

Every day that passes without action is another day lives are unnecessarily put at risk.

Please sign this petition and help us call for meaningful traffic calming measures on Beachy Head Road.

Together, we can help prevent further tragedies and make this road safer for everyone.
