Make Barry a firework-free zone
The Issue
I am a resident of Barry, and every year between October to January our life is ruled by fireworks. The relentless explosions deeply affect not just me but also my pets and create havoc for families with young children and individuals with additional needs. There are weeks where it is every single night for hours at a time. And it goes on for months.
Every year during this period, the atmosphere in our neighborhood changes. The unexpected booms and flashes startle animals, causing anxiety and sometimes leading to lost pets, panic attacks, and cause a lot of anger for local residents. Children, especially those who are sensitive to noise, find it hard to settle at night, leading to disturbed sleep patterns. Adults with sensory processing disorders or PTSD experience heightened distress. But its not just this time of year. Every month so far this year over 20 fireworks have been set off, on random nights, with no warning. Just as you're going to bed, or putting the kids to sleep, suddenly your life is thrown in to chaos because of some people wanting to "have some fun".
According to research by the RSPCA, thousands of animals are adversely affected by fireworks each year, some with fatal consequences. Studies have also shown that fireworks can exacerbate conditions such as autism and PTSD, affecting emotional and mental health.
By making Barry a firework-free zone, we can create a safer and more harmonious community. Allow planned, coordinated events to go ahead where we have enough notice, on weekends or holidays. And the rest of the time we can choose alternative, silent celebrations that do not result in fear or distress.
If this gets enough signatures we will present it to our local council, urging them to take action in any way they can, by asking retailers to not sell fireworks, and clamp down on unplanned fireworks that cause so much distress. We believe in a Barry where celebrations do not come at the cost of our well-being and that of our loved ones.
Please sign this petition to support a firework-free Barry and ensure our community remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
