Make All Carnegie Mellon University Classrooms Fully Accessible

The Issue

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a renowned institution that prides itself on diversity and inclusivity. However, not all classrooms are fully accessible to students regardless of their physical ability and size. This lack of accessibility can hinder the learning experience for some students, creating an unequal educational environment.

CMU Policy assures the university will not discriminate against any person regardless of identity. Yet, for disabled and larger-bodied students, many classrooms at CMU fall short of these standards.

Many classrooms and lecture halls have steep stairs, thin seats, or restrictive desks that do not fit all students. The inability to fit in a classroom can cause emotional and physical discomfort and/or physical difficulty attending class. While some classrooms do not have this issue, those students who attend classes in certain lecture halls and classrooms may have a disrupted learning experience due to the lack of accessible spaces.

By making all classrooms at CMU fully accessible, we can ensure an inclusive learning environment where every student has an equal opportunity to succeed academically. We urge Carnegie Mellon University to take immediate action towards this issue and uphold its commitment towards diversity and inclusivity.

Sign this petition if you believe in equal access to education for everyone at CMU.
