Make Alcohol-Free Options Mandatory and More Accessible in UK Supermarkets

Make Alcohol-Free Options Mandatory and More Accessible in UK Supermarkets
The Issue
Too many people trying to cut down or quit drinking walk into supermarkets and find almost no alcohol-free options. In my local supermarket, there were just three alcohol-free drinks available — and one was permanently withdrawn. This is not good enough.
Alcohol-related harm kills thousands every year and costs the NHS billions. Raising prices through taxation only punishes the poor and does nothing for people who are already struggling with addiction. Instead, we should make the healthier choice the easier choice.
Some may argue that soft drinks, juice, or soda are already alcohol-free alternatives. But these are not substitutes. Alcohol-free beer, wine, and spirits give people the same social experience and flavour profile as their alcoholic counterparts. They allow people to participate in social rituals, enjoy the taste they like, and reduce the risk of relapse — something juice or cola cannot do.
We call on the Government to:
- Require large supermarkets and retailers to make at least 10% of their alcohol shelf space alcohol-free alternatives, with the possibility to increase this quota over time.
- Ensure alcohol-free options are displayed next to their alcoholic versions, not hidden away.
- Guarantee that alcohol-free products are included in promotions and seasonal displays.
This is not about punishing people for drinking — it’s about normalising alcohol-free choices so everyone has a real option. Whether you’re health-conscious, sober-curious, in recovery, or just don’t fancy alcohol today, you deserve to see alternatives on the shelf.
Let’s make alcohol-free normal, visible, and accessible. Sign this petition to help push the Government to act.
