Make Alameda Safer For Students!

The Issue

Please add your signature to this petition in support of safeguarding the well-being of Aragon students who commute to school on foot or by bicycle. (Last year, a driver hit an Aragon student…  ) No one wants to see that happen again. As engaged students, we have an opportunity to come together and make a real difference in creating a safer environment for students, parents, and neighbors who walk or bike in our campus area.  Safety improvements would have the added benefit of helping younger kids who walk or bike to Baywood Elementary as well.

The City says the streets around Aragon and Baywood can't have reduced speed limits because they're already too fast, dangerous, and busy, which is unfortunate. Recently, some students got hurt near Aragon because of this. The city has an opportunity right now to act to make things safer for those of us who walk, bike or scoot to school.

Connecting to Aragon High School, the intersection of Alameda de las Pulgas and Woodland Dr is currently lacking a stop sign, which poses a potential hazard for both pedestrians and cyclists, particularly those heading to and from Aragon. Our aim is to advocate for the installation of a stop sign at this crucial location. By doing so, we can promote responsible driving habits and ensure a safer passage for everyone.

Additionally, we are proposing the installation of more stop signs and crosswalks around Aragon High School. As it stands, most intersections near Aragon have no crosswalks or stop signs. Streets like Georgetown Ave, Sonora Dr, Hobart, and Castilian Way could all benefit from a stop sign where they intersect with Alameda. Many students walking to school are forced to walk in the opposite direction, just to cross the street. The addition of stop signs and cross walks would significantly enhance the safety of our students and other pedestrians, allowing them to cross streets with ease and confidence. This means they won't have to take detours or compromise their safety by crossing the busy road without a crosswalk.

Furthermore, we believe it's essential to consider the addition of a separated bike lane on Alameda. This initiative not only encourages alternative transportation methods but also promotes a healthier and more sustainable way of commuting. By providing cyclists with a designated space away from vehicular traffic, it would ensure safety for them while allowing drivers to keep up their pace without fear of hitting a kid on a bike.

We the petitioners are asking the city of San Mateo to consider our request to add these stop signs and a separated bike lane to ensure the safety of the entire Aragon community.
