The Issue

Growing up in the UK, many of us have become accustomed to the mild summers that, until recently, characterized our climate. However, climate change is radically altering our summers, bringing heatwaves and unprecedented temperatures. Unfortunately, millions of schools, hotels, supermarkets, and public spaces across the UK lack the basic amenity of air conditioning (AC), making life unbearable during these sweltering periods. This needs to change.

I have experienced firsthand the unbearable conditions in public spaces, including schools and workplaces, during these heatwaves. Imagine sitting in a classroom trying to concentrate, or attempting to work efficiently, drenched in sweat, simply because there are no proper cooling systems in place. Without action, many more will needlessly suffer through the heat in the years to come.

The Met Office has documented the alarming trend of increasing average temperatures and the frequency of heatwaves in the UK. According to a 2020 report, the frequency of hot days is set to increase, with predictions that the 40°C threshold, not long ago unthinkable in the UK, could become more common by mid-century if no action is taken.

The health implications are significant. Public Health England has highlighted that overheating can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, which can be fatal without immediate medical intervention. Vulnerable populations such as children in schools, the elderly in care homes, and those with underlying health conditions are particularly at risk.

Solving this problem is not only about comfort but about ensuring public safety. I propose that all public-access buildings, be they schools, workplaces, or businesses, be legally required to install and maintain functional air conditioning systems. Government support, such as subsidies or grants, could assist in mitigating the costs for the implementation and running of these systems, making it feasible for all businesses and institutions.

The goal is not only about keeping cool in the summer but also about preparing our society for the inevitable changes in climate that are fast approaching. Installing air conditioning should not be seen as a luxury but a necessity for public health and safety.

Please join me in calling on the UK Parliament to make air conditioning a legal requirement in public buildings. Sign the petition to ensure everyone in the UK can feel safe and comfortable in public spaces, regardless of the temperature outside. Your signature can make a profound difference.
