In light of recent events and growing concerns about immigration policies affecting our communities, students at La Mesa Junior High School feel compelled to take a stand. We are calling on school leaders to approve a school-sanctioned walkout focused on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issues. This walkout will provide students with the opportunity to express their views and stand in solidarity with affected families, ensuring their voices are heard in a structured and responsible manner.

For many students, immigration policy is not just an abstract political debate—it is a life-altering reality that impacts their friends, family, and future. According to the Pew Research Center, there are approximately 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States, many of whom face daily fear and uncertainty due to stringent immigration enforcement policies. As educators, community leaders, and citizens of a democratic society, it is crucial for us to support our students in their pursuit of civic engagement and social justice.

We propose a safe, organized walkout during school hours that complies with all legal and educational requirements. By allowing this walkout, school administrators can ensure student safety and security while empowering young individuals to participate in important civic actions. The walkout will include educational components, featuring speakers from various backgrounds to provide students with diverse perspectives on the immigration crisis. 

Approving this ICE walkout is an educational opportunity that promotes critical thinking and active citizenship. It allows students to connect classroom teachings with real-world issues, fostering a greater understanding of civic responsibilities and social justice. We, therefore, urge La Mesa Junior High School leaders to support this initiative, demonstrating their commitment to student safety, expression, and engagement.
