Maintain Year-Round Operation of Croydon Memorial Pool

Maintain Year-Round Operation of Croydon Memorial Pool

The issue

The Croydon Memorial Pool is a vital part of the Maroondah, VIC community. It provides a place for families to gather, children to learn swimming, and residents to maintain their health through regular exercise. However, access to our pool is limited to seasonal use only. This would deprive our community of an essential resource during the off-season months.

With the recent closure of the Kilsyth Centennial Pool, Yarra Ranges residents are now flowing across to Maroondah to use our swimming facilities  The increased numbers to our Aquahub and Aquanation facilities for lessons and other aquatic demands has seen limited lap lane availability for the lap swimming community and we are being increasingly pushed out to other local council areas to enjoy a decent swim  This is not good enough! Especially when we have a perfectly wonderful heated outdoor 50m pool sitting there going to waste during the winter months

Indoor pools, whilst a great resource, have become over crowded and the air quality inside these venues can trigger allergic reactions in many people

Council claim that it is too costly to keep our pool open year round yet other councils manage to do so. Council are happy to sink funding into other recreational facilities such as sports grounds that are only used on weekends and yet claim we can’t afford to keep our pool open.

During the recent closure of Aquahub for 4 weeks, many people came to Croydon Memorial Pool and stated how wonderful it was as they never knew of its existence. Maroondah Council response has previously been that people won’t come yet they haven’t provide the opportunity for it to be trialled. They limit the opening hours so that many can’t come then use the excuse that it’s not patronaged

As a Maroondah Leisure member at a considerable cost, it is not good enough that I cannot access lap swimming lanes during winter due to over crowding at Maroondah indoor pools and that I have to travel to either Aquarena, Monash Aquatic or Boroondara Sports Complex for a decent swim at an outdoor pool (these local councils understand the needs of their ratepayers!).  As ratepayers, you should not have to do this either or miss out entirely either!

There is a movement across Australia and here in Victoria to keep our outdoor pools open with some hugely successful campaigns. Let’s ensure our Maroondah Council listens to what other councils are doing and what we are asking for!

We urge Maroondah Council to please keep Croydon Memorial Pool open all year round! Sign this petition today and show your support for maintaining this valuable asset in our community.
