Maintain the Availability of Junior/Senior Housing Options at Our University

Maintain the Availability of Junior/Senior Housing Options at Our University
The Issue
As a student who values independence and the sense of community within our University, I am deeply concerned that the option of Junior/Senior Housing (termed as University Village) is being threatened. Our University Village has been instrumental in my collegiate experience and that of many others; it transcends being mere accommodation. This transformative space provides a unique semi-independent living experience that is cherished by many of us from various states.
Our community is diverse and vibrant - packed with out-of-state students, international students, and those who yearn for a sense of independence while still remaining connected to university life. For us, the University Village is not just housing - it's an essential part of our university experience.
More broadly, a review of literature on student housing suggests that accommodations such as our University Village play essential roles in student satisfaction, retention, and overall university achievement (Schudde & Scott-Clayton, 2016). Thus, discontinuing such an important housing option could potentially undermine the student experience, affect retention rates and, in turn, the reputation of our beloved institution.
We recognize the financial and operational challenges the university might face; however, we believe it's of utmost importance to find and consider alternatives that continue to support the valued option of our Junior/Senior Housing.
By signing this petition, we kindly request the University administration to reconsider the decision, keeping in mind thousands of students who depend on this housing option, and who value the unique learning and growth experiences it offers. We are a community, and we kindly ask you to support us in preserving our University Village.
