As a student at St. Mary's University in Calgary, I have had the benefit of enjoying free parking, which has been in place since the university opened in 1986. This perk has not only served as a selling point for the school but also eased the financial burden for students. Our fees are already significantly higher than other universities in Calgary charge. The information to change the free parking was released during the 2024 spring semester through a subscription newsletter that was not sent to all students. The time of the release is suspicious because there is no longer an adequate amount of time to apply to other institutions for next year when the parking fees will be implemented at St. Mary's. A sudden decision to charge for parking threatens to add unexpected financial stress for students. 

According to Statistics Canada, the tuition fees for Canadian universities have increased by 2.9% for undergraduate programs for the 2022/2023 academic year. Moreover, the cost of living in Calgary is higher than the Canadian average, causing additional economic strain to students who are already investing heavily in their education. 

Preserving free parking at St. Mary's University not only provides relief to students but continues an important tradition that our university has proudly maintained since its inception. We appeal to the University Administration to reconsider this decision and continue the provision of free parking.
