Magaliesburg - Illegal Mining and Zama-Zamas

The Issue

Dear Magaliesburg Community,

We are seeking your support for a petition urging the South African Police Service (SAPS) to address the ongoing Zama-Zama issues in Magaliesburg, especially in Zuickerboschfontein, Blaauwbank, Golden Valley, Maloney’s Eye, and Koesterfontein.

This petition builds on our previous complaint about "Illegal Mining and Criminal Activity," which we submitted to the Magaliesburg SAPS and delivered to Captain Tsotetsi on April 14, 2022. Despite highlighting the significant impact of illegal mining and Zama-Zama activities on our community, the situation has worsened. Although these issues are frequently mentioned in the monthly Rural Safety Meetings, as documented in the minutes, SAPS has taken no effective measures, and regional or district operations have had little to no impact over the last few years.

Our community continues to face frequent trespassing, particularly in Golden Valley, where intruders encroach on private properties. The discharge of firearms in and around Golden Valley and Koesterfontein has escalated dramatically, posing a severe safety and security threat to residents, landowners, and tenants.

Two years have passed since our initial complaint, yet there has been no noticeable progress in curbing Zama-Zama and illegal mining activities in Magaliesburg. This lack of action compels us to escalate the issue to the District SAPS level. The community feels increasingly endangered, and the uncontrolled discharge of firearms adds to our growing anxiety.

The Zamas quickly disappear when a SAPS marked vehicle arrives in the area, indicating that the support and manpower from Magaliesburg SAPS are insufficient to apprehend those engaged in illegal mining activities, especially when they retreat underground. The Zamas frequently discharge firearms at night, and it is rumored that different groups are clashing. Furthermore, they do not even flee when a single police vehicle patrols the area.

To ensure widespread participation, this petition will be distributed electronically via the web, WhatsApp, Telegram, and other community forums.

By e-signing this petition, I (the undersigned) endorse the community complaint lodged on April 14, 2022, and support escalating the matter to the District SAPS. We urgently demand intervention and action from the District SAPS. You can view an electronic copy of the signed complaint dated April 14, 2022, in the Dropbox folder linked below:

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Magaliesburg Rural Community & MCF
