Make Eid a Recognized Holiday

The Issue

Hello,

My name is Ayah and I am a sixteen-year-old second-generation Egyptian American. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to the realization that there are many under-represented people of color in our very diverse state. For the past four years, I have sadly witnessed the atrocious racism directed to Muslims at all levels of our society. Starting at the government level, trickling all the way down into the fabric of our society.  However, Governor Inslee has taken a stand from day one to support Muslims in Washington state and stand against discriminatory and unconstitutional laws.

With change in the air and a fresh start, I am hopeful that the Lake Washington School District will stand with the Muslim community on one particular issue that has become very important to me as a Muslim American. My religion's main holiday – Eid - isn't recognized as an official day off from school and work. I’ve seen and heard accounts from many friends and family members that they are unable to take the day off to celebrate these very holy days with each other. In some cases, my father has had to travel for work during our holidays.  Many students are unable to take the day off and have even had to take exams on Eid.

Islam is the third largest religion in America and there are approximately 3.5 million Muslims in the United States.  We are and have been an integral part of the fabric that makes up this country.  It is high time that we are represented.

Please join me and sign this petition, so that Eid may be a recognized holiday in the Lake Washington School District.
