We are Brazilian environmental agents. Our work is to take care of 20% of the world's biological diversity. We work in the Amazon and 5 other biomes, including 2 biodiversity hotspots: Cerrado and Atlantic Forests.
We work on Scientific Research, Biodiversity Monitoring, Protected Areas Management, Red Lists, Conservation Planning of endangered species , Wildlife Management, Wildfires Fighting, Environmental Education, Regulation for Communitarian Sustainable Use, Representation in Environmental Forums, Participative Management, Environmental licensing, Environmental Quality Control, Authorization for the Use of Natural Resources, Environmental Inspection, Environmental Police, Environmental Emergencies, among many other activities.
It is a lot!
We love what we do, and we are extremely committed to our mission.
However, our job is not easy at all...Brazil is the second most dangerous country for environmentalists. And many times, the threats come from our own government. The last Brazilian government was tragic to all environmental workers. But let’s be fair, our abandon comes from long time ago. We are 10 years without being listened by Brazilian governments. During this period, our salaries suffered a purchasing power loss of 75%. An experienced environmental agent after 20 years of dedicated work, with master’s and PhD degrees, is paid less than new professionals at many other public positions. Besides, we suffer with the bad working conditions and work overload.
In 2022, right after winning Brazil’s election, Lula da Silva caught the international spotlight at Glasgow’s COP27 by promising to achieve zero deforestation in the Amazon by 2030. The results came quickly as we did the best we could to implement the environmental policies, to decrease deforestation and improve all environmental indicators. 2023 ended up with a 62% decrease in Amazon deforestation.
Lula and Marina Silva used our excellent results in 2023 to promote themselves at international forums. Even though, our demands for fair salaries, career and working conditions were constantly ignored while we watched other public servants receiving generous raises.
There was no alternative than starting a national environmental strike to try forcing the dialogue. At the second day of our national strike, the government provoked the justice to make our movement illegal. A judge aligned with the government, in only two days (which is extremally rare in Brazil) denied our rights for a strike and we were forced to come back to work. Just to add some perspective, the Brazilian public universities were on strike for more than two months in 2024 and their workers were not persecuted. Their rights were respected.
Taking care of the environment in Brazil is not an easy task. However, we are extremely motivated. What moves us is the believe our work is a tool for improving live on earth. We do not work for this or the next government. We work for current and future generations!
So now we need your help! You have the power to demand the president Lula to be coherent with his international speech.
We believe our claim is reasonable: we do deserve to be paid at least the same as the Water National Agency (ANA) workers since we have similar duties. We demand to be treated as other public servants and to have our rights and dignity respected.
A fair career will prevent the evasion of qualified employees, value our work and strengthen our institutes so that we can deliver even better results. There is still time to Lula to change the course until COP30 so he can show national actions aligned with his international speech. You can ask Lula to honor his commitments and to respect environmental agents.
To face climate change, protect biodiversity and provide a healthy environment is huge task which demands commitment from all of us. We must respect the environment as well as those taking care of it.
Please, sign the petition demanding Lula to respect environmental agents.
We are counting on you so you can count on us for a long time!
