Help spread the word about road safety in Berkeley Heights! The Township is continuing its "Slow Down in Our Town" campaign, moving the signs to the neighborhood around William Woodruff School—and you can join in!

From now through the end of the school year, Berkeley Heights will be distributing and displaying “Slow Down in Our Town” signs and recycling bin stickers on roads leading to and from the Woodruff School neighborhood. The goal is to remind drivers to be aware of children, pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

Come get signs and stickers if you live along Briarwood Drive East and West, Lawrence Drive, Ferndale, Springfield Ave. (from shortly before Briarwood to shortly after Robbins Ave.) or any other nearby sections where you experience traffic issues.

Here’s what to do …

WHAT: Pick up two free signs and two recycling bin stickers. If you have a larger lot or corner lot, take two additional signs.

WHERE: 103 Briarwood Drive, by the front steps (front door is on Ferndale)

WHEN: Anytime from Wednesday, June 4, through Monday, June 9.

HOW: Place the signs in your yard, with one facing each way, visible from the street but set back from the right of way or any sidewalks.

Place one to two stickers on the sides of any recycling bins you own (not ones you lease from your trash pickup company) so they'll be visible every recycling day!

WHEN IT ENDS: The signs should stay up through June 18—the last day of school. They will then be rotated to a new neighborhood to reach other drivers. (We can rotate them back at the start of the school year in the fall.)

Return the signs to the same location by June 22; if you miss that, you can drop off the signs at the Police Department office.

Among the Township's upcoming sign locations are:

  • Timber/Mountain/Snyder
  •  Plainfield Ave.
  • Springfield Ave.

If you can volunteer as a pickup point for the signs or to help spread the word, or if you live in a different area and want the signs placed there, email me at dnigrobh@gmail.com.
