Lower the Speed Limit and Add Stop Signs on Upper Mountain Avenue, Montclair
Lower the Speed Limit and Add Stop Signs on Upper Mountain Avenue, Montclair
The Issue
As residents of Upper Mountain Avenue in Montclair, we've witnessed firsthand the dangers of speeding vehicles. On November 13, a car exceeding the speed limit tragically hit our beloved dog, Hamlet, without even braking. This incident is not isolated; we constantly see cars speeding by with little regard for safety. We fear that the next incident may result in a loss of a child's life.
We are calling for an ordinance to amend Section 327.11 of the Montclair Code to reduce the speed limit from 35MPH or 30MPH to a safer 25MPH on Upper Mountain Avenue from Bloomfield to Jerome. This section is not a county road and should be subject to local traffic regulations that prioritize safety over speed.
In addition, we urge the township council to install all-way stop signs at Berkeley, Watchung, Jerome, Bellevue, Van Vleck, Alpine and Edgewood Road intersections. These measures will further deter speeding and force drivers to pay more attention while navigating our neighborhood.
We also encourage the Montclair Vision Zero task force to reconsider the street design of Upper Mountain to implement other ways to reduce speed and unsafe driving.
By implementing these changes, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries in our community. We implore you - help us make Upper Mountain Avenue safer for everyone who lives here or passes through it daily. Please sign this petition today!
