For many of us living in Watervliet, NY, this issue is personal. Half of our community members are collecting Social Security and are on a fixed income. The current garbage penalty fees ranging from $100 to $200 are simply unaffordable for us.

We propose that these fees be reduced by half. This reduction would still ensure compliance with waste management regulations while not disproportionately impacting our most vulnerable citizens.

According to the U.S Census Bureau data, approximately 50% of Watervliet's population is either retired or living below the poverty line (source: U.S Census Bureau). It's clear that these fines are not just an inconvenience; they're a significant financial burden for many residents.
