Lower Social Media Age Requirement to 15 to Facilitate Youth Engagement
Lower Social Media Age Requirement to 15 to Facilitate Youth Engagement
The issue
I am a young, aspiring musician with a dream to reach people worldwide and touch their hearts through music. Social media offers platforms such as TikTok where many artists my age have managed to jump-start their music career. Unfortunately, the current age requirement to be on social media is limiting for many teenagers like myself. This petition is to lower the social media age restriction from 16 to 15 years old.
There are millions of teenagers out there with untapped potentials, including those who battle mental health issues. Studies show that more than 60% of teenagers turn to social media as an avenue for them to open up about their mental health struggles (American Psychological Association, 2020). By lowering the threshold to 15, we would enable more adolescents to voice their struggles and receive the necessary support online.
Moreover, social media is an excellent platform for teenagers to develop their career at an early age. It is not exclusive to music, but other fields too, such as acting, writing, and digital art. Allowing 15-year-olds on social media opens doorways for them to express their talents and leap forward in their career paths at a young age.
The proposed change herein is fueled by dreams and the undying spirit to impact lives positively through music, and the potential benefits it holds for psychological health support and early career development. We call upon internet regulatory bodies and social media platforms to consider this appeal and adjust the age requirement to 15 years old. Your signature can help create a world where teenagers have the opportunity to engage with the global community sooner. Please sign this petition and help us bring this change to life.
