The Issue

For many of us in Rhode Island, each month represents a struggle as we try to balance our budgets just to pay our gas bills. Close friends, family members, and countless other community members scramble to figure out how they will afford this essential expense. The culprit is not the cost of the gas or electric itself, but the astronomical delivery fee charged by Rhode Island Energy.

With the majority of the state using their services, Rhode Island Energy is taking advantage of its customers by charging double the amount of the actual gas and electric consumption on top of the bill. This is a glaring injustice especially to our low-income families who are disproportionately burdened by this added cost. This situation is not simply unfair, it's untenable. The fee they are charging is not merely exorbitant, it borders on the exploitative enabling them to profit at the expense of the very people they should be serving.

This pattern of extraction isn't just about hitting customers where it hurts the most—it questions the very legality of this fee. It's time for a change. Our plea is for Rhode Island Energy to review its policies and adjust the gas & electric delivery fee to a more reasonable and affordable rate for all its customers.

The Fight for fairness begins with your signature. Please, sign the petition to have Rhode Island Energy lower their gas & electric delivery fees.

Thank you for reaching out regarding the petition on Rhode Island Energy's delivery fees. I appreciate your advocacy on this important issue. I want to highlight 3 bills I have introduced that aim to address concerns related to utility costs and consumer protection: • H5018: the profit margin of any electric distribution company gas distribution company, would not exceed four percent (4%), in any given calendar year. • H5161: Creates a special joint legislative study commission to study public ownership of certain public utilities, including electricity and natural gas. • H5577: Impose requirements and actions that certain electric distribution and gas distribution companies must meet prior to implementing rate changes. Warmly, Representative Megan Cotter, District 39

For those who have signed the petition, thank you for adding your voice and elevating your concerns. Today (Thursday, Jan. 30th) my colleagues had a zoom meeting with officials from Rhode Island Energy where the issue elevated in this petition was discussed. I agree there is a lot of unhappiness and concern with these fees and costs, especially with the profits and salaries of the company being so high. We are working on addressing the issue and bringing relief to the people of Rhode Island as soon as possible. Thank you. State Rep. Edith Ajello
