Lower property size restrictions for keeping chickens

Lower property size restrictions for keeping chickens
The Issue
Having chickens in our backyard has been a rewarding experience for my family. Not only do my kids learn invaluable lessons about responsibility, compassion, and biology from raising them, but chickens also serve an essential ecological purpose by controlling bugs and pests in our garden. Unfortunately, West Leechburg Boro currently prohibits keeping chickens on smaller properties, which excludes countless families like mine from enjoying these benefits.
Countless municipalities across the country have successfully implemented policies to allow smaller properties to house chickens while maintaining community standards and protecting neighborhood integrity. With simple regulations, such as limiting the number of chickens and setting basic coop guidelines, smaller property owners can successfully maintain chickens without causing disturbances.
Many small property owners hope to contribute positively to their local ecosystem and economy. Chickens not only provide fresh eggs and educational opportunities, but also reduce dependency on industrial farming practices. They contribute to local sustainability by fostering environmentally-friendly backyard farming.
The current property size restrictions prevent many from experiencing the benefits of keeping chickens, which can improve food security, enhance educational opportunities for children, and promote sustainable practices. By reassessing and lowering these property size requirements, our community can take a significant step towards more sustainable and inclusive legislation that supports urban farming and family education.
Your support is crucial in advocating for practical changes that reflect our community's growing interest in sustainability and education. Lowering the property amount limit for housing chickens will ensure that more families have the opportunity to teach their children invaluable life skills while contributing to a greener future.
Sign this petition to help make small-scale backyard chicken farming accessible to all property owners who wish to enjoy these benefits.
