Lower Presidential Candidate Age Requirement for Progressiveness and Youth Representation
The Issue
As a young individual passionate about politics, I often find myself at odds with the decisions being made by our leaders. These decisions - viewed through old lenses of hardship many of our youth haven't experienced - don't align with how our world has evolved. Progress is synonymous with youth, and yet, the country's policies and decisions remain veiled by the old mindset.
This age-old system influences youths more than it may seem. The decisions reached impact our future, and still, we lack the ability to serve at the helm due to an arbitrary age requirement. The vestige of a time when wisdom was measured solely by years lived, not by the breadth of knowledge or progressive attitudes.
According to the U.S Constitution, a person must be age 35 to run for the presidency. However, we live in an era where youths under 30 are making significant impacts on society through their innovative contributions in technology, culture, and politics. Countries like France, Canada, and Austria have seen their leaders in their 30s and younger, leading effectively and diversely, balancing tradition with time-appropriate policies.
There’s no denying that our demographic is on the rise both in voter turnout and political activism. The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement reports that around 50% of voters aged 18-29 voted in the 2020 election. The younger generation's engagement in politics is increasing, and it's time our representation did too.
Lowering the age requirement to run for President allows fresh, relevant, and more diverse perspectives to surface, leading to inclusive leadership that effectively caters to all constituents, not just those of a certain age. Change shouldn't be feared but embraced. If we believe in our democratic principles, then the people will choose the leader they deem most suitable, regardless of age.
Therefore, we request a revision of the age requirement to run for presidency, making our democracy more inclusive, vibrant, and representative of our diverse nation. Stand with us in modernizing our system and enabling youth representation. Sign this petition, add your voice to ours, It's time for change.
