Lower parking fees for Santa Monica High School students
The Issue
Today, my card was confiscated at the Hilton Parking Structure, and I was told I need to pay a whopping $150 to cover parking costs for just the remaining seven days of September in order to continue parking there. This felt like a huge financial strain, especially for a high school student. I'm not alone in experiencing this; my friends and I couldn’t help but think that the Hilton is taking advantage of us, high school students, in an unfair manner, and thus, we are seeking justice.
We all know how expensive living in Santa Monica can be, and adding such exorbitant parking fees is an undue burden. Students often have tight budgets as we balance our studies with part-time jobs, extracurricular activities, and sometimes even family obligations. It's already challenging enough without being hit with these unexpected and disproportionate fees just to park our vehicles.
For many Santa Monica High School students, the Hilton Parking Structure is one of the few viable options for parking in proximity to the school. It is unreasonable for us to expect students who are already contending with academic pressures to bear such unfair financial burdens just to attend school. Not to mention, charges like these might even discourage further education participation or compel some students to make tough decisions about how they allocate their limited resources.
The Hilton, as a major corporation, has the capacity to offer more reasonable rates to its younger clientele, particularly when school is multiplied with mounting educational expenses. We propose that Hilton Corporation reconsider and lower their parking fees for Santa Monica High School students to a more affordable level. This can be achieved by offering student discounts, introducing a monthly cap on rates, or creating student-focused permits.
