Fuel prices in New Zealand are pushing everyday Kiwis to the limit.

While global events have driven costs higher, a large portion of what we pay at the pump isn’t just fuel — it’s tax. Right now, every litre includes Fuel Excise Duty, Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) costs, and GST applied on top of it all.

That means New Zealanders are effectively being taxed multiple times on something that is not a luxury — but a necessity.

For many families, fuel is essential. It’s how we get to work, get our kids to school, run our businesses, and stay connected. But as prices continue to rise, households are being forced to make tough choices — cutting back on groceries, delaying bills, or going without.

At a time when inflation is already hitting hard, these added fuel taxes are making a difficult situation even worse.

We are not asking for the impossible — we are asking for relief.

We call on the New Zealand Government to:

Reduce Fuel Excise Duty

Review and ease ETS-related fuel costs
Remove or reduce GST applied to fuel

Lower the cost of RUCS for diesel

Even temporary reductions would provide immediate, meaningful relief to thousands of Kiwi households and small businesses.

Kiwis are doing it tough — and they deserve action.
