BP Canada: Lower Carbon to Save the Polar Bears

BP Canada: Lower Carbon to Save the Polar Bears
The Issue
Melting sea ice has become a massive, global issue. The longer ice-free seasons have caused the polar bears to spend more time on land and has increased conflict between humans and polar bears as they search for more food. Their population is declining at an alarming rate due to climate change and the melting sea ice.
Climate change is not just about polar bears. It’s about all life on Earth, including people. The impacts range from health problems to crop failures, refugee issues, and losses from extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and massive storms.
Currently, all fossil fuel companies receive direct subsidies from the Canadian Government. As a fossil fuel company, you are also not held accountable for the damage you cause through carbon pollution. We urge you to apply the funds received from government subsidies to shift your corporate practices.
We suggest the subsidy funds are directed to the following practices:
1. Sourcing more environmentally friendly ways of extracting fossil fuels
2. Sourcing renewable energy resources to shift your company away from fossil fuel use
3. Environmental cleanup efforts to mitigate the damage caused by your company extracting fossil fuels from the earth
As one of the largest carbon emission companies in Canada, we urge you to make significant changes to your company to reduce your emissions and begin to shift to more environmentally friendly renewable energy sources before it is too late for our planet and our polar bears.
