The Issue
I rely on the bus system every single day to get to work, to buy groceries, and basically to maintain my everyday life. But with the recent increase in bus fares, I'm finding it incredibly difficult to manage my expenses. Despite working hard, my income barely covers my essential needs, and now, even something as basic as maintaining clean laundry has become a struggle. I, like many others who depend on public transportation daily, am faced with a challenge I shouldn't have to bear alone.
The bus system is a lifeline for countless individuals like myself, many of whom are on tight budgets. For some, it is the only available mode of transportation. Yet, fare hikes impose an unfair burden on individuals who are already financially stretched. We are expected to find additional funds for transit when we are already struggling to make ends meet.
Public transportation should be accessible and affordable for everyone, not just a privilege for those who can afford ever-increasing costs. An affordable bus fare at $2 was manageable, not just for me, but for the community at large. It made accessing employment opportunities, education, and essential services feasible for many who rely wholly on public transit.
Communities like ours suffer when public transit becomes inaccessible. Higher fares discourage ridership, leading to more cars on the road, increased emissions, and ultimately, a weaker public transportation system that no longer serves its purpose. It's not just individual livelihoods at stake, but the environmental and societal impacts become evident, affecting us all.
Therefore, I urge local transit authorities and government officials to consider the heavy burden imposed on daily commuters and drop the bus fares back to $2. This action will ensure that public transportation remains a viable option for all, fostering a sustainable community where everyone can thrive.
Join me in advocating for an equitable and accessible transit system that supports rather than hinders our daily needs. Please sign this petition to help return the bus fares to a reasonable and fair rate of $2. Let's make public transportation affordable for everyone again.
