Advocate for Racial Justice in Long Beach, NY
The Issue
We are urging Long Beach elected officials to combat racism in all forms. Over the past few days, the true spirit of Long Beach emerged as residents from all walks of life gathered to demand justice for the senseless murders of Black people at the hands of police officers. Here in Long Beach, we know that diversity is our greatest strength. However, the historic legacy of racism continues to stifle our Black neighbors and neighbors of color. We demand an immediate end to these policies.
Long Beach elected officials have the ability to make reforms to further racial equity now. The national movement has brought urgency to the local racial economic equity. We know that the path to true equality is long, but we are committed to remaining united and focused in the following policy proposals.
Priorities for the Long Beach Board of Education:
- Hire Black teachers.
- Teach Black history.
- Stop over-punishing Black students.
- Increase mental-health services.
- Equip guidance counselors and social workers.
Priorities for the Long Beach City Council:
- Reform the police department, starting with the ongoing search for a permanent police commisisoner.
- Expand affordable housing options.
- Hire Black full-time employees in all departments and at all levels.
- Create Black landmarks, including changing Riverside Blvd. to MLK Blvd.
- Fund projects and programs in the Black community.
Priorities for Nassau County Elected Officials:
- Reform the police department.
- Expand affordable housing options.
- Hire Black full-time employees in all departments and at all levels.
- Support Black-owned businesses.
- Fund projects and programs in the Black community.
Priority for New York State Legislators:
- Repeal 50-a, which keeps police officer disciplinary records secret.
- Return police union political contributions.
- Expand use and funding for body cameras.
- Legalize recreation marijuana and expunge prior records.
- Advocate for affordable housing.
By signing this petition, we commit to policies that will achieve racial equity in Long Beach. These priorities are a great first step.
