I am a Michigan State University student that was forced to shelter in place in Bessey Hall on the evening of February 13th. Myself and approximately 40 other students and a faculty member sheltered for over two hours while the suspect was still at large around campus. The situation was terrifying on its own. Additionally, our classroom did not have locks on our doors to protect us. Several young men in our class removed their belts and tied them to the door handles as a makeshift barricade, keeping us safe via "tug-of-war" essentially. We could not barricade the doors due to them opening outward. They stood by the doors with pepper spray from some of our female students and a pocket knife. 

We had pepper spray, belts, and a pocket knife to protect 40 individuals from a mass shooter.

I am asking for signatures to put locks on every classroom door on this campus. More ideal, scanned entry to each and every building. This is necessary to help students feel safe in an educational environment. I know I do not feel safe attending class in person for the rest of this year and I can’t imagine any other MSU student feels safe either.
