Petition to Change "Mammy Ln" to "Hattie Ln"

Petition to Change "Mammy Ln" to "Hattie Ln"

The Issue

This petition was made in response to recent City Council measures to change the naming of "Mammy Ln". In the proposed resolution the suggested change is to "Slatery Ln". A more appropriate and meaningful name change would be "Hattie Ln".

This would be after Hattie McDaniel, the black woman who played "Mammy" in "Gone with the Wind". This character was a black nursemaid. When you think about the setting in the book, it was based in the times of the Civil War. Mammy's were women who were house slaves that tended to the homes and children of plantation owners. This term was made to exploit black women and to glorify the hierarchy of slave positions on the plantations.

This term continued through the Jim Crow era and turned into a black caricature. Much to the likes of Sambo and Pickaninny. These terms are ABSOLUTELY offensive to the black community and have no place to continue to exist in modern culture.

Hattie McDaniel was the first Black Woman in our history who received an oscar. She was only allowed to sit in the award ceremony as a favor. She received her award as she sat in the back of the room, away from her co-actors. This is just part of the history and background of this street name.

In efforts to fit the theme of the neighborhood, and to honor the woman who played "mammy" on screen. I petition to change the name of the street to "Hattie Ln". We must not allow this kind of blind ignorance to continue.

Thank you.
