Roisin Grasby started this petition to Local and UK government

This petition is in response to what was the temporary closure of Lewisham Donation Hub. Although they have been able to re-open, there is a chance that this could be challenged at a higher level, so showing support through various means, like this petition, is vital.

Over the past few months, they have continuously stepped up to help anyone in need. Their dedicated volunteers are passionate, responsible and irreplaceable. This Facebook page gives more information about LDH and just some of the work they do: https://www.facebook.com/lewishamdonationhub/

To have had their services deemed not essential enough when they are helping people in situations like these, is baffling:

  • A Mum escaping domestic violence, needing a double pram
  • A family with 3 children about to be kicked out of their temporary accommodation during freezing winter temperatures
  • Providing children and others with laptops and devices to help them stay connected and able to carry on with school during lockdown
  • Helping a Mum and her baby, who needed shoes and warm clothing.
  • White goods and furniture to those with nothing. In late December 2020, a volunteer alerted them to a fellow refugee, living with his wife and one month old baby, without a working fridge freezer (theirs having failed at the start of November). LDH were able to deliver them a fridge freezer, 2x chests of drawers, cot bed, baby bouncer, soft toys, newborn clothes, TV stand, clothes rail and other things besides.
  • Food and essential items such as soap, toothpaste, nappies and sanitary pads

The list goes on. Whilst the hub was closed, they had to turn people away. Many people requiring these vital services do not speak much or any English. They possibly felt confused and anxious and may not have been able to understand why they were being turned away. Some may have felt like they had ran out of options and were desperate.

We need to show the support that is there for LDH and that we are ready to challenge the decisions that lead to limiting their services so much. This is not an attack on the people called to do their job in enforcing compliance, rather the rules that clearly don’t reflect the need in the community and responsible, safe services that LDH provide.

Thank you.
