Let’s Make History!  Liz Cheney for Speaker of the House!!

The 118th Congress officially begins on January 3, 2023, with a Republican majority.  One of the first orders of business for the new Congress will be to elect the Speaker of the House (who is historically the nominee of the majority party since the Speaker is elected by a majority of the House Members present for the vote).

As the presiding officer of the House, the Speaker guides both the agenda and the tone for the House of Representatives, and has significant influence on what the House will accomplish during his or her tenure.   Kevin McCarthy (R, CA), the presumptive Republican choice for Speaker for the upcoming Congress, has shown himself to be a spineless, flip-flopping, political hack in recent years, and his priority for the 118th Congress appears to be wasting precious tax dollars on a laundry list of investigations into political opponents, impeachments, and other political stunts designed to “own the libs” and block any and all Democrat initiatives, regardless of merit.  In other words, he is promising more gridlock and political gamesmanship in Washington.  The pundits and many former members of Congress, including many Republicans, are already predicting chaos under his leadership.

A better option would be Liz Cheney, a principled, lifelong Republican, who has demonstrated courage, conviction and commitment to American ideals throughout her career.  Although not an elected member of the 118th Congress, according to House Rules, the Constitution does not require that the Speaker be an elected member of Congress (Ch 34, Sec 3).

It's time to move beyond the scorched earth politics of grievance, outrage, revenge and personal invective.  There are real challenges facing our nation and our tax dollars should be spent wisely on problem-solving and building a better future for our country, our children, and our world.  In our “big house” of 331 million plus people, we have differing priorities and points of view, and the purpose of our representative government is to bring all those different points of view together and find common ground to move forward.  

Liz Cheney has the experience, the wisdom, and the grit to get things done in the House of Representatives and contribute towards real-world progress in making government work again.  

In these uncertain and momentous times, let’s make history!  Let’s move beyond the theatrics, extremism, and hyper-partisanship that has poisoned our politics and bedeviled our American ideals for the last decade.
