Listen to Her Heart: Demand PPCM Screenings to Save Mothers’ Lives

The Issue

No mother should have to fight for her life when her heart is failing. Every woman deserves to thrive after giving birth, but far too many are left to suffer in silence due to undiagnosed Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM).

PPCM is a life-threatening heart condition that develops during pregnancy or after childbirth, yet it often goes undiagnosed because its symptoms—fatigue, swelling, and shortness of breath—are mistakenly attributed to normal pregnancy changes. The reality is that PPCM can be deadly if left untreated, and many new mothers are tragically diagnosed too late.

Early detection is key. Studies show that screening for PPCM can dramatically improve outcomes and even save lives. Yet, despite the availability of simple, effective tests, PPCM screenings are not universally included in prenatal and postpartum care.

It’s time to change that.

Let’s protect both moms and babies by making PPCM screening a standard part of prenatal and postpartum care.

We are calling on healthcare providers, hospitals, and lawmakers to take immediate action by:

  1. Implementing mandatory PPCM screenings for pregnant women and during postpartum care to detect heart failure early.
  2. Educating healthcare professionals on the signs and risk factors of PPCM, while also raising awareness among pregnant women for early intervention.
  3. Increasing funding for PPCM research to enhance early diagnosis, treatment options, and long-term care for new mothers.

We cannot allow any more mothers to suffer or die from undiagnosed heart failure. No mother should have to fight for her life when her heart is failing.

Sign this petition today to raise awareness and make PPCM screenings a routine part of care for every woman. Together, we can save lives.
