Our main outlook in this petition is to stop the SMJUHSD Board of Education and The California State Board of Education to change student's schedule ​without the actual input of these people being affected by these school policies (AKA students). ​We want to put a stop to this schedule change to help shape it into a more healthier, and less stressful way for students. These changes are adding more weight to teens when they already have stuff/problems to worry about. Teens are already going through puberty, anxiety, bullying, depression, family problems, abuse, work, and more. Especially the students who have jobs. A lot of students are already stressed with the work their schools give them. Most having classwork that takes them a day altogether to do. How can they do their work if they have class from 7:30-3:10 and they still are on their computers? That's over 9 hours worth of sitting down and staring at a screen. It's unhealthy and not right to students. They're trying their best just to keep up with their classwork. So they believe that adding more zooms can help them learn? This is causing students to stay up all night trying to get assignments in on time so they can get a good grade and get a good education. We asked some students what they think the schedule will affect others and this is one's opinion, "The semester is nearly over and NUMEROUS students have expressed how we’re struggling the last few months and now they want to confuse everyone and add more zooms. It seems like they’re blaming students for their lack of organization or direction you know and everyone is already overwhelmed​." Here's another student who works and is a senior at one of Santa Maria's high schools, "I just put in an application for a job with the times from the old schedule, so I said I had Wednesdays and Mondays off. I got an interview. Now they suddenly change it. I need the money right now because I planned on moving at the end of senior year but I would need money to do that. Plus my tablet is super slow and takes about 10 minutes to boot up then it slows all the way down after one class so several in a row on Mondays would murder it. Putting this schedule up all of a sudden if sort of.. uncalled for.. lots of students are having trouble already and with the new schedule I'm just worried about all the other working students and older siblings who have to help students through this." This has become unfair and unreasonable. We need this to change, and we will make that happen with your help. I thank you for taking you time to read this.
