As a current Navy veteran for almost a dozen years, I’ve seen way too many instances of massive food waste take place at every location I’ve been stationed to, ship and shore. I feel a large amount of discomfort in knowing how many people in this country are dumpster diving and resorting to disgusting methods to obtain food. The US Department of Defense is one of the heaviest employed forces within the country and around the globe. Because of the high number of troops, airmen, soldiers, sailors, guardsmen and even civilians, there is a lot of food served to accommodate these high numbers.  As a result, most food get wasted excessively and become pollutants which damage our global health. I want those in need to reap the benefits of food that get scrapped because they were not eaten fresh initially at the time of its first serving. I am petitioning for excessive food at DoD facilities to be donated to homeless shelters so not only does the food not go to extraordinary waste, but those dealing with hunger can be taken care of and not wait to see when their next meal is and where they get it from.
