Limit Fireworks Sale to Only Licensed Professionals

The Issue

As someone who lives with a rescue dog who is deeply terrified by the loud sounds of fireworks, this issue is incredibly close to my heart. Not only does my companion suffer from severe anxiety every time individuals illegally discharge these explosive devices (often in direct contravention of the Explosives Act 1895), but there is also the risk significant property damage caused by setting them off without adequate safety measures. Sadly, our experience is far from unique, with countless pets and humans alike having to endure such stressful situations.

The RSPCA reports that around 45 percent of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks, indicating a widespread problem that requires more than individual solutions. Moreover, a survey conducted by the Fireworks Safety Council has shown that there are roughly 1,000 injuries every year from fireworks, with over half of these incidents taking place at private or family events.

This issue necessitates immediate and careful attention to ensure safety and peace within our own homes and communities. Therefore, we urge for the restriction of fireworks sales to only licensed professionals. By doing so, we can assume that every detonation of fireworks is managed responsibly and in accordance with proper safety standards. Also, it would aid in preventing unauthorised or inappropriate use of fireworks, adding another layer of protection for both people and animals from the harmful effects of these devices.

These issues are not only limited to dogs, but to all animals big and small as well as people who suffer from PTSD, Dementia, ASD, Asperger’s Syndrome & other sensory issues.
